If I Could

If I could protect you from the horror
Of being human
I would

I would tear out my heart
And hold it up like a shield
For you

But I cannot
In this world where
I proclaim
Nothing is impossible
I don’t have the tools
To do this one simple thing

And it hurts
To watch you face
The demons of life
And be helpless
To be unable to save you

And it sucks
To know if I tried
That I would condemn
You to life crippled
And unfulfilled
Cheated of your right to feel

If I could protect you from the pain
And not steal
The experience
I would
